Deglycyrrhizinated licorice (DGL) has been used clinically for decades to support and protect the gastrointestinal mucosal lining. DGL delivers the benefits of licorice without the glycyrrhizic acid, a compound associated with hypertension and mineralocorticoid excess. Licorice is rich in triterpenoids and flavonoids, which have demonstrated the ability to inhibit inflammatory enzymes such as COX-2 and 5-LOX, reducing the production of inflammatory compounds like IL-6, prostaglandin E2, thromboxane B2, and leukotriene B4.
